It’s extremely difficult to debate someone, never mind having to debate someone with seemingly no grasp on reality.
Unfortunately, Ana Navarro was forced to do just that on a Live CNN debate with Matt Schlapp, former Political Director of President George W. Bush and Chairman of the American Conservatives Union. The result? An utterly hilarious debate that invokes a strong sense of empathy for Navarro. This is every holiday family meal with your Trump-loving uncle Bob and Navarro does not hold back.
Between Schlapp constantly trying to change the subject to abortion, science and climate change — Navarro managed to get a few good digs in. Specifically, she was able to reiterate that President Donald Trump is indeed a liar and to try to defend him and the actions of his administration in trying to spin his lies is reprehensible. She called Schlapp out for trying to change the course of the conversation while a CNN anchor tried to respectfully appreciate his perspective on an issue entirely irrelevant to the topic at hand.
Among the list of things that Schlapp said and did to thoroughly infuriate Ana Navarro — and most people watching with half a functioning brain — were attempts to say that science supports pro-lifers, and that his feelings (skepticism) around climate change entitles him to spread misinformation about it. Interestingly, all he had to say following Navarro’s epic rant was: hold the White House accountable then. Thank you, we will.
The debate was supposed to be a discussion about CNN’s recent poll which identified that more than 3 in 4 Americans do not believe they can trust information coming from the Trump White House. This historic statistic is of course not surprising to the majority of us who follow Trump and his constant alternative facts and gross exaggerations, but it is heartening to know that the number against Trump is growing.
In response to the poll, when asked what the solution was to President Trump’s credibility issue, Navarro slammed:
‘I think the solution is very simple: start telling the truth. Start telling the American people the truth, taking your job seriously, stop making things up, stop exaggerating, stop outright lying and then repeating it over and over and over again…’
She continued, then getting into just what she thinks of those complicit Republicans around him — a clear jab at the position Schlapp has taken up and incorporated some very creative and apt descriptors for the way Trump has been acting:
‘…I think that people around him, instead of justifying it, instead of spinning it, instead of defending it need to tell him, “You are no longer the host of the Apprentice, you’re not a used car salesman, you are the president of the United States and the American people deserve to — have to — be able to believe you at some point… We need to believe our president when he stands behind that podium and speaks to us. And today, Donald Trump has no credibility because he’s been president for 200 days and he has lied practically every. single. one. of those days.’
Yes! You tell ’em, Navarro. Trump’s credibility issue isn’t even worth debating. Everyone knows why President Trump has a credibility issue — he hasn’t proven to be credible in any sense of the word.
Beyond this point, the debate really degrades as Schlapp is allowed to drag the conversation completely off the rails. Navarro listened for awhile, her frustration visible. Then, she finally snapped at Schlapp and shut him up once and for all:
‘Some of you may choose to believe alternative facts and live in an alternate universe, some of us choose to believe in a factual universe…You cannot defend the fact that the president of the United States is a compulsive, pathetic daily liar.’
