After Donald Trump gave a highly politicized speech to the annual Boy Scouts National Jamboree in West Virginal, Chief Scout Executive for the Boy Scouts of America Michael Surbaugh had to apologize. Then, Trump created his own mythical account of what happened.
The actual speech was filled with political remarks repeatedly slamming Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama, Then, Trump bad-mouthed the media for what he said was unfair coverage.
In an interview with the president, The Wall Street Journal wrote that 45’s speech was “mixed.” Yet, Trump did not think his speech was a problem. Indeed, he took his denial to a higher level, TIME reported:
‘They loved it. I’d be the first to admit mixed. I’m a guy that will tell you mixed. There was no mix there. That was a standing ovation from the time I walked out to the time I left, and for five minutes after I had already gone. There was no mix.
Not content to let the status quo remain, the president said that Surbaugh even phoned him to say it was “the greatest speech that was ever made to them,” according to Wall Street Journal. However, the Boy Scouts told TIME they knew nothing about their national leader calling the White House.
Chief Scout Executive for the Boy Scouts of America Michael Surbaugh released a statement apologizing to anyone in its community who was offended or distressed by the president’s politicized speech. According to TIME, it read:
‘The Chief Scout Executive’s message to the Scouting community speaks for itself. For years, people have called upon us to take a position on political issues, and we have steadfastly remained non-partisan and refused to comment on political matters. We sincerely regret that politics were inserted into the Scouting program.’
Trump’s interview occurred on July 25th, but the Wall Street Journal did not release the full transcript, only excerpts. Politico acquired the full transcript and released it Tuesday.
